In search of “WA”

Something “Japanese” is often expressed as “WA” in kanji, a Chinese character.
This kanji does not only mean “Japanese” but also can mean “softness” “comfort” “mix” “harmony” “balance” “peace”…
“WA” is a kanji made by combining the shape of a mouth and millet ears swaying in the wind. In the course of our long history, we can see that people have valued the blessings of nature and living in harmony has been a virtue.
The term “WA” seems to reflect the spirit of Japan.

Unfortunately, “WA” tends to be abandoned in the midst of today’s busy lives. Many people are pulled apart from the natural environment and are living under stress. Many may be living with loneliness.

There are several other kanji with a different meaning, but all have the sound “wa” in common.
For example, there is a kanji for “cycle” and it could be referred to environment. Another one means “circle/ring”, and so as “talk/story”.

“HARMONY & PEACE/BALANCE” creates good “ENVIRONMENT”, and a good environment creates “CIRCLE” of people. Circle of people brings about “TALK/CONVERSATION/STORY” and further harmony=WA is nurtured through discussion.

Isn’t it interesting that everything is linked to one another?

We believe that “Wah!” and “WOW!” expressing surprise, excitement, and joy are also “WA“ as well.
